Terms and concepts
What is an OEM?
An OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) is the company that designs the final product and sells it under its own brand; in automotive, the vehicle manufacturer.
What is a Tier-1 supplier?
A Tier-1 supplier delivers parts or systems directly to the OEM. Tier-2 suppliers deliver to Tier-1 companies, and Tier-3 suppliers to Tier-2.
What is an RFQ?
An RFQ (Request for Quotation) is the document a buyer sends to suppliers asking for a price and a technical offer for a defined part or project. It is the first stage of Hazelco’s methodology: before the RFQ phase, supplier networks, capacity, cost structures and sustainability readiness are analysed.
What does nomination mean in automotive sourcing?
Nomination is the buyer’s decision to award a project to a particular supplier. Hazelco manages the tendering process, pricing strategies and OEM communication up to the nomination phase.
What is APQP?
APQP (Advanced Product Quality Planning) is the structured method the automotive industry uses to plan a product and its manufacturing process, from concept to series production, so that customer requirements are met. Hazelco gives technical support for APQP and quality documentation.
What is PPAP?
PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) is the automotive procedure by which a supplier proves, with documents and sample parts, that its production process can consistently make parts that meet the customer’s specification before series deliveries begin. Hazelco gives suppliers technical support in preparing PPAP.
What do SOP and Pre-SOP mean?
SOP (Start of Production) is the date series production begins. Pre-SOP is the validation period before it; in this stage Hazelco completes validation and capacity trials and coordinates the transition to series production.
What is Kaizen?
Kaizen is a Japanese term for continuous improvement in small, ongoing steps. After SOP, Hazelco applies Kaizen methods to increase production efficiency, reduce waste and improve profitability.
What is IATF 16949?
IATF 16949 is the quality management system standard for the automotive industry, published by the International Automotive Task Force and based on ISO 9001. OEMs and Tier-1 companies commonly expect their suppliers to comply with it.
What is VDA 6.3?
VDA 6.3 is the process audit standard published by the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA). It is used to assess a supplier’s processes from project management through series production.
What is process-based cost modeling?
It is a way of calculating a part’s cost from its components — raw material, energy, labor and process steps — instead of relying on a quoted price. Hazelco builds these models from billet casting through extrusion, machining, anodizing and surface finishing.
What is cost benchmarking?
It is the comparison of a company’s cost structure with reference values from the market. Hazelco benchmarks its cost models against global market standards and provides transparent cost benchmarking for Tier-1 suppliers.
What is aluminium extrusion?
It is the manufacturing process in which a heated aluminium billet is pressed through a steel die to form a profile with a constant cross-section.
What is a billet?
A billet is the cylindrical cast aluminium log that is the starting material for extrusion.
What is anodizing?
It is an electrochemical surface treatment that builds a hard, protective oxide layer on aluminium, improving corrosion and wear resistance.
What is CNC machining?
It is computer-controlled cutting — milling, drilling and turning — that brings a part to its final dimensions and tolerances. Hazelco recommends the CNC machines, robots and supporting systems that achieve the required cycle times.
What is cycle time?
It is the time needed to complete one part or one operation. Hazelco analyses production lines, cycle times and equipment layouts to optimize investment plans.
What is a carbon footprint?
It is the total greenhouse gas emissions caused by a product, a process or a company, expressed as CO₂ equivalent. Hazelco provides carbon footprint assessment, emission analysis and reduction strategy consulting.
What is decarbonization?
It is the reduction of the carbon emissions caused by production. Hazelco addresses it through energy efficiency, machinery optimization, integration of renewable and solar energy, and recycling scrap and process waste back into the production cycle.
What is supplier qualification?
It is the assessment by which a buyer verifies that a supplier is technically and commercially capable before awarding business. Hazelco designs and manages sourcing processes that connect OEM-level projects with technically and commercially qualified suppliers.
What is ROI analysis used for in investment decisions?
ROI (return on investment) is the gain from an investment relative to its cost. For production equipment and automation investments, Hazelco combines process know-how with ROI analysis to help suppliers reach a sustainable cost advantage.
What is an EV battery enclosure?
It is the structural housing that carries and protects the battery modules of an electric vehicle; it is often made of aluminium to save weight. Hazelco provides cost modeling, PPAP readiness and serial-production optimization for aluminium battery enclosures.
